Every story makes a promise. The good stories keep their word. That is to say every story draws you in, makes you ask questions, and creates a problem. And by doing so a story simultaneously promises to answer those questions and deal with that problem. After all, every story has to have a problem (what’s called “the fall of action”), otherwise we won’t believe it. We won’t trust it. We won’t see our story within the story.
